　　《美国往事》并不是一部风格明显的类型片，虽然它从30和70年代鼎盛的黑帮片中获取了影片的故事背景(此片的小说原作者哈利格瑞也的确是个真正的前帮派分子)，黑帮电影仅仅只是提供了一个故事载体而已。影片主人公面条并不象一个传统黑帮电影中黑帮人物，他更像一个屈从于环境和直觉的平凡之人，同时也为此付出了一生的代价来寻求最终的救赎。事实上导演赛尔乔莱翁内(Sergio Leone)是非常细心地对这部影片进行了挑选和斟酌，这也是为何他身为意大利人，却把此片的人物设置在犹太黑帮的背景之下。大部分美国黑帮电影讲述的都是意大利裔帮派或者爱尔兰裔帮派，但曾经在禁酒时期空前活跃的犹太帮派却很少有电影提及。
　　《美国往事》从某种程度上讲，是一部纯粹的作者电影，它承载的是导演赛尔乔莱翁内所有的“美国情结”(赛尔乔莱翁内本人并非在美国出生且未在美国长期生活过)，他所要讲述的并非是一个逻辑完整的传统故事，而是他本人对他一生所钟爱的美国历史、文化与精神的一次纯粹自我的表达。因为他对于大洋彼岸的理解并非像科波拉这样在街边成长起来的意裔美国人，而是通过银幕上的美国电影所获得和积累的，所以他才会拍摄一部带着非美国气质的美国题材的电影来完成自己一生所求证的事物。
